He's a reverend... He IS a vicar....

They call him vicar, because, well..... He is one. It would be like calling a priest "father" or a Protestant minister "reverend"

Yea I think it is kind of a British thing, I've always wondered though... Is it just an Anglican thing, or are Catholc priests in England called vicars too?

That's what I thought. I know some higher up Catholic officials are called vicars, like the Pope is called the Vicar of Christ on Earth. But just ordinary priests aren't called vicars

The word "vicar" comes from the same root word as "vicarious". A vicar oversees a congregation as a respresentative of the Bishop. The Pope is called the "vicar of Christ" because Catholics believe he is Christ's representative on earth. In the Episcopal Church - the branch of the Anglican Church in the USA - a the priest in charge of a congregation that is not completely financially self supporting is called a vicar. I'm not sure if that is also the case in the UK - that the name vicar is connected to the church's financial status.

I really don't know, the churches here are quite overly religious when there's no need... And they are called vicars, but I don't know why, but only in the Anglican church. I don't know much about Catholicism, I mainly know about born again Christianity...
